Lawo Deploys IP-Based Video Infrastructure For University Of Nebraska’s HuskerVision

HuskerVision, the University of Nebraska’s athletic production unit, has completed the second phase of a multi-year modernization with the deployment of a video infrastructure from Lawo, a provider of live media production workflows, including workflow management, physical I/O and processing solutions.

The ST 2110-based system follows an audio upgrade in 2023 and creates a unified, software-based production environment across the university’s athletic venues. The setup allows for simultaneous shows from multiple control rooms while providing student operators with professional-grade broadcast tools.

The project, integrated by BeckTV, connects venues including Memorial Stadium, Hawks Championship Center, the Devaney Center, Pinnacle Bank Arena, Haymarket Park and the Dillon tennis and Hibner soccer complexes. All locations feed into a single IP backbone for three control rooms inside Memorial Stadium.

“Doing audio first was key,” Scott Guthrie, recently retired chief engineer, said. “We learned timing, stream management, PTP, device discovery — all the fundamentals. When it came time to roll out video, everyone was ready.”

The core of the infrastructure uses Lawo’s .edge platform as a high-density gateway and IP processing node. It provides 3G-SDI and 12G-SDI ingest with native ST 2110 connectivity.

“We can bring in signals from any venue — whether five cameras from volleyball or a full football package — and everything just shows up in the fabric,” Garrett Hill, HuskerVision technology director, said. “Routing video or audio essences independently is as easy as moving blocks around.”

The system also uses Lawo’s HOME Apps running on COTS servers for multiviewing and up/down/cross conversion. This reduces the need for traditional baseband converters and allows the university to scale resources based on specific event needs.

“From season to season your shows change — and sometimes just from sport to sport,” Brock Raum, BeckTV senior engineer, said. “With HOME Apps you shut down the tools you don’t need and spin up the ones you do.”

The entire environment is orchestrated through Lawo VSM, providing a single control layer for video routing, tally and device control.
