  • The meeting of the friends of the Hampshire and Hampden Canal on the 22nd inst. was generally attended. The directors, commissioner and engineer of the New Haven Canal were present. The statements of the Hon. Judge Baldwin and James Hillhouse were exceedingly interesting to those who wish success to the undertaking.

  • A large sponge received recently from Tarpon Springs, Florida, is on exhibit in the window of Boyden’s restaurant. The sponge is placed in a dish of water, which climbs up the sponge and evaporates, keeping it from drying up.
  • Mrs. J. F. Fortier of Florence Street, Leeds, will soon enter the Springfield Sanitarium to undergo treatment for nervous shock sustained when her husband was involved in an automobile accident last fall.

  • Northampton yesterday acquired its first major parcel of conservation land as city officials and an attorney for Floyd and Naomi Andrus finalized a “friendly taking” of some 98 acres of land near the Leeds Reservoir. The property has been described as “a lovely parcel for walking and hiking.”
  • St. Michael’s elementary and high schools, which have operated in Northampton since 1891, will close at the end of the current school year. The decision ends a year of speculation about the future of the school. Decreasing enrollment and rising costs were cited as the reasons for shutting down the facility.
