How Camper Calling Music Festival Technology Works

Ever wondered about the technology behind the massive screens at your music event? Pansonic has revealed details of how its partner, CPL, deployed the Panasonic KAIROS IP-based live video production platform at the annual Camper Calling Music Festival.

At the 9th Camper Calling Music festival in Warwickshire, CPL deployed a combination of Panasonic technology to share the event with the audience on large screens. CPL combined Panasonic’s 4K AK-UC4000 studio camera, AW-bitUE160 PTZ units, and a range of MultiViewers and camera control units. The systems all use the SMPTE ST 2110 IP-based transmission standard and are linked to the AT-KC2000 KAIROS mainframe that CPL has invested in.

The streamlined Panasonic suite of equipment means that CPL now requires less equipment than historically, and yet can deliver a richer experience to the crowd. The platforms have more functionality than ever, and CPL can move it between events easily. The KC2000 mainframe boosts production flexibility, allowing CPL to easily add VT playback, keying, clips, sponsor loops, and schedules to festival screens.

The winning combination of Technology and IP-Based Production

KAIROS’ Smart Routing automatically switches video input to the network switch, enabling more sources and avoiding bandwidth issues. It simplifies creating nested scenes, making cutting and mixing easier. Panasonic MultiViewers let operators quickly view and adjust live feeds, while UC4000 and UE160 PTZs deliver consistent picture quality and colour for seamless transitions.

Lee Gruszeckyj, Production Director at CPL, commented, “Panasonic’s UC4000 studio cameras have been brilliant – our operators love them. Everything is intuitive, and the menu features are exactly what they need.

“We have had no problems whatsoever, and the picture quality is excellent. The colour matching between the UC4000s and the UE160s is spot on, making it very easy to cut between them.”

IP-based video production offers increased scalability, improved, higher-quality video, and significant cost savings by using standard Ethernet infrastructure rather than expensive, dedicated coaxial cabling.

CPL has employed Panasonic’s KAIROS platform and UC4000 studio camera chains for events including The Glammies, Tropic Skincare’s premier event dedicated to recognising its community of ambassadors. As CPL becomes increasingly confident in IP-based workflows, the company is enhancing its training initiatives and integrating new talent into the KAIROS ecosystem.

PTZ Camera Capabilities at Camper Calling

Panasonic’s flagship UE160 4K PTZ camera has enabled CPL to capture uncompressed 4K visuals of audience and stage shots from a long distance at Camper Calling – without any image degradation.   (repetition of previous section)

With UE160s installed on shock-proof isolation mounts, operators can switch to any shot at any time. CPL has also used KAIROS to deploy flexible presets for Panasonic PTZ cameras. Assigned to macro buttons on the camera mix, this has enabled operators to quickly capture drum risers, crowd shots, and more. This will save valuable seconds for CPL in a multi-stage production that continues to grow in both size and complexity.

Gruszeckyj, comments: “Everyone at CPL is extremely happy with the KAIROS platform. It offers a combination of features specifically tailored for engineers and operators, and overall, it’s very user-friendly. The improvements we’ve seen over the last couple of years have been significant.

“Furthermore, CPL is proud to be positioned as a training hub, helping bring the wider industry up to speed with Panasonic’s KAIROS platform. This reflects our long-term commitment to the KAIROS ecosystem and its role in shaping the future of live production.”

Enterprise Times: What does this mean?

CPL has experienced several notable benefits from utilising Panasonic equipment. The KAIROS platform and UC4000 studio camera chains have delivered reliable, high-quality performance at major events such as Camper Calling. It enables seamless IP-based workflows and supports CPL’s ongoing investment in industry training.

Additionally, the flagship UE160 4K PTZ cameras have allowed CPL to capture uncompressed 4K visuals over large distances without image degradation. Thus ensuring outstanding audience and stage shots. With shock-proof isolation mounts and flexible presets managed via KAIROS, operators enjoy rapid, versatile control. Thus, saving valuable time in complex, multi-stage productions.

These innovations have helped CPL grow its event capabilities and positioned the company as a leader and training hub for advanced live production technology.

For Panasonic, it demonstrates that its AV technology can be used effectively at the largest venues to help deliver experiences that go beyond what people hope for.
