A number of area residents attended a slide presentation by the Northampton Historical Society last night at which the society called for the acceptance of the Damon-Pratt Historic District into the National Register of Historic Places. The district is in the Bridge Street-Pomeroy Terrace area.
Members of the Northampton Board of Public Works said last night that they are not convinced the city needs a consolidated parks and recreation department. However, they agreed to take part in an ad hoc task force with recreation commissioners and school department officials to make a further study of the issue.

Amy Longley, Greater Easthampton’s 2001 Junior Miss, returned from a weeklong trip to Franklin Sunday with the state title and the opportunity to compete in the national program in June. Longley, 18, became the first Easthampton Junior Miss to win the state title since Debbie Murawski in 1976.

As progressive as it purports to be, Northampton has a long way to go when it comes to addressing racism, panelists said at a forum Wednesday night. They suggested that Northampton’s liberal reputation may in fact hinder residents from noticing the everyday discrimination Black people face in this overwhelmingly white community.
State Sen. Eric P. Lesser believes the time for a high-speed commuter rail line connecting Springfield to Boston is long overdue. “The time really is now for this issue,” Lesser, D-Longmeadow, told the Joint Committee on Transportation Wednesday.
