S.D. native, former Sioux Falls attorney leading Guthrie investigation for FBI
A Madison native and former Sioux Falls attorney is leading the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance for the FBI.
Heith Janke is the special agent in charge of the Phoenix office and has gained international attention for his role leading the investigation into the disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” host Savannah Guthrie.
He’s a graduate of the North Dakota State University, where he became a national champion in the 800 meters at the 1998 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Sioux Falls attorney Roger Sudbeck of Boyce Law Firm LLP worked alongside Janke after the law school graduate joined the firm. Janke was at Boyce from 2002 to 2004.
“He was pretty quiet guy, very thoughtful and smart, and a really hard worker as reflected by his being a national champion in track,” Sudbeck said.
“You’ve got some work ethic to be able to do that, and a really even-keel temperament. Everybody liked him a lot.”
After a few years practicing law, though, Janke told Sudbeck he “felt a call to go serve his country, and he was going to the FBI,” Sudbeck said.
Janke then spent about 13 years as a special agent before becoming chief of police in West Fargo from 2017 to 2020 and then returning to the FBI. He since has specialized in cybercrime, money laundering, forfeiture, bank fraud and white-collar crime. He was named to his current role last June.
“He’s kind of your gold star of what the FBI looks for,” Sudbeck said, pointing to Janke’s legal background and athletic prowess.
“I’m sure if they could come up with a model for a perfect FBI agent, he was probably it.”
While Sudbeck doesn’t keep in touch directly anymore, he has kept up with Janke’s career through friends and colleagues and wasn’t surprised to see a video of him leading the effort in Arizona.
“I would think he would have risen pretty high in the FBI, just knowing his acumen,” Sudbeck said.
