HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Indiana defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Bryant Haines was named the winner of the Broyles Award, honoring college football’s top assistant coach, at a ceremony Thursday night at Oaklawn in Hot Springs.

Haines’ selection adds another marquee honor to Indiana’s 2025 season, which ended with the program’s first national championship and an undefeated 16-0 record.

Indiana’s defense finished among the nation’s elite across multiple categories this season, including No. 2 in rushing defense (77.2 yards per game) and No. 2 in scoring defense (11.7 points per game), while also ranking No. 4 in total defense (266.0 yards per game), according to IU. The Hoosiers forced 30 turnovers and produced 46 sacks, both cited as program-defining outputs in the release announcing the award.

IU said the unit did not allow more than 24 points in any game in 2025 and held opponents under 100 rushing yards in 13 of 16 contests. The defense forced at least one turnover in 14 games and closed the year with a nine-game streak of forcing a takeaway.

The Broyles Award, now in its 30th year, is presented annually to the top assistant coach in FBS football. The Broyles Award organization listed Haines among five finalists for the 2026 ceremony weekend.
