  • Three Northampton residents who were in different areas of Guatemala apparently survived unharmed last week’s series of destructive earthquakes. Information today from several sources indicates that Edward and Claire Manwell of Ward Ave., and Betsy Stone of South St., were not injured in the earthquakes.

  • Plans are under way for a $2-million shopping center off Route 10 at the Southampton town line, town officials learned last night. Representatives from Big Y Foods, Inc., unveiled their plans to a “great reception” at an informal meeting with town officials at the Kenneth Road home of planning board member Carl Houghton.

  • South Hadley School Superintendent Michael Smith, who died during a weekend getaway to Boston, leaves a 25-year legacy of serving public education in Western Massachusetts. Smith, 47, died Saturday in Boston on a weekend vacation, said William Ryder, director of Ryder Funeral Home in South Hadley. The cause of death has not been determined, he said.
  • Members of the Northampton School Committee say they feel a bit uneasy that their choice for the next school superintendent, Michael Cosgriff, has not accepted the post. Reached by telephone Monday, Cosgriff said he cannot officially accept the post “until I see what they put down on paper” concerning a contract. But he said he hopes to make a final decision within two weeks.

Speaking, as always, in a fiery manner that defies synopsis, West told around 2,000 people packed into John M. Greene Hall to strive for integrity above all else and to cut against the grain.
  • The Good Time Stove Co. in Goshen has once again sent one of its products to the big screen. An antique potbelly stove purchased from the shop on Route 112 is featured in director Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, “The Hateful Eight.”
