  • A Northampton couple, Edward J. and Claire Manwell of 20 Ward Ave., are said to be working in San Marcos, Guatemala, about 80 miles west of Guatemala City, but there has been no report of their fate today. Officials in Guatemala reported more than 2,000 deaths in the wake of Wednesday’s earthquake.

  • A masked man last night robbed a Northampton nursing home of prescription drugs after holding a revolver to the throat of a nurse. The Pine Rest Nursing Home at 5 Franklin St., was robbed by a man who appeared at a side door asking to use a telephone to report a disabled car.

  • Six men found trespassing in the basement of the former Northampton State Hospital were arrested by State Police early Sunday morning. Police said security guards stationed at the abandoned mental hospital found that a window grate had been cut and was lying on the ground. The men were found inside with bolt cutters and a video camera.
  • Students today are more used to keyboards and computer screens than paper and pencils, and researchers say that may impact their results on the MCAS exam. A report by Boston College’s National Board on Educational Testing and Public Policy indicates that students could score up to eight points higher on the essay portion of the state’s assessment test, if allowed to take it on computer.

  • The Amherst building committee Tuesday selected the Wildwood site for the building that could replace both Wildwood and Fort River elementary schools. Thirteen of the committee’s 15 members selected the option of a new building with two wings, each of which would house a 375-student Grade 2 to 6 school.
  • Five employees at the University of Massachusetts have been put on paid leave while another has resigned as part of a continuing internal investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct that involved the misreporting of time and misuse of campus resources in the Physical Plant division, according to university officials.
