U.S. Senate field taking shape
The new KSTP/SurveyUSA poll gives some idea of where the Senate race in Minnesota stands.
There is no clear frontrunner for either the Democratic or Republican nominee for Senate, so it was difficult to do hypothetical head-to-head matchups, like with the governor’s race.
The poll asked voters, of all the Senate candidates in either major party, who do you support for Senate right now?
Democratic Congresswoman Angie Craig and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan lead the pack, with Craig at 20% and 19% for Flanagan.
Republican Michele Tafoya was the pick of 13%, making her the highest-ranked Republican, well ahead of Royce White, who won the 2024 Senate nomination.
With Flanagan and Craig likely to engage in a tough primary battle, Republicans hope to use that to their advantage.
“Republicans are very much hoping that Flanagan is the nominee because they believe they have a much better chance against her than against Craig,” said Steven Schier, a Carleton College political analyst.
He added that part of the GOP’s strategy will be to tie Flanagan to the fraud that they were hoping to use against Gov. Tim Walz.
“That will be a GOP strategy, to try and resurrect the fraud issue, make it at the front of voters’ minds, and in that way, damage Flanagan and other Democratic candidates.”
Meanwhile, Tafoya tops other Republicans just over a week after getting into the race because of her name recognition.
The Senate race remains fluid, and other candidates might get in.
Mark York, a farmer from southwest Minnesota, is the latest to announce his candidacy as a Republican but was not included in our first poll.
Our survey included 35% Democrats, 30% Republicans and 29% independents. SurveyUSA interviewed 650 adults from the state of Minnesota from Jan. 27-30. Of the adults, 575 were identified as being registered to vote and were asked the questions that follow. This research was conducted online, using a nonprobability sample of online adult panelists chosen randomly by Cint USA.
