Lakeland Responds to Icy Road Conditions Amid Ongoing Winter Weather

The City of Lakeland continues to respond to resident concerns over icy neighborhood streets while prioritizing the safety of major roadways during the ongoing winter weather event, according to Lakeland Mayor Josh Roman.

As part of the emergency response issued by Governor Bill Lee, local governments across Tennessee have been encouraged to focus limited resources on keeping primary routes passable and ensuring access for emergency vehicles. In line with that guidance, Lakeland crews pretreated major corridors including Canada Road, U.S. 70, and U.S. 64, as well as key collector roads such as Memphis-Arlington Road, Fletcher Trace Parkway, Davies Plantation Road, Chambers Chapel Road, and Stewart Road.

City officials used a combination of brine spray and a salt-and-sand mixture to treat these roadways. They noted that the treatment is most effective when temperatures remain near or above 20 degrees. However, repeated overnight drops below that threshold have caused melted precipitation to refreeze, particularly on neighborhood streets where lower traffic volumes allow ice to form more quickly.

Lakeland currently operates two trucks equipped with front-mounted plows but does not own a dedicated snow plow. Crews have been focusing on pushing slush off roadways before it refreezes and plan to continue operations through the weekend in an effort to help residents return to work safely on Monday.

In a video posted to Facebook, Mayor Roman announced that the city has also contracted a local company to begin clearing residential streets this weekend to further address neighborhood conditions. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through Sunday, and officials say crews will continue monitoring road conditions and adjusting response efforts as needed.
