BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – January 18, 2026

Two people were killed and three others were injured early Sunday after a vehicle crashed into the attached garage, which was actively on fire when responders arrived at a home in the 3800 block of East Anderson Road, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies were dispatched at about 2:39 a.m. after Monroe County Central Emergency Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a possible house fire with occupants potentially trapped inside. When first responders arrived, deputies observed a vehicle in the garage and the structure actively burning, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators said one person escaped the residence with severe burns and a second person at the scene provided initial information to deputies. Both were taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and later transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment.

While assisting fire personnel, deputies accounted for two additional occupants of the residence and began searching for a person of interest suspected of starting the fire. With assistance from the Bloomington Police Department and Indiana State Police, the person of interest was located about an hour later in a wooded area on the property.

That person of interest also suffered burn injuries and was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital before being transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis, authorities said. Charges are pending.

The Monroe County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the deceased. The investigation remains active and involves the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Division, the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Monroe County Fire Protection District and the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
