BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Bloomington’s resident-led Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission has changed the start time for its annual commemoration on Monday, Jan. 19, shifting the program to earlier in the evening to accommodate community members who also plan to watch Indiana University in the College Football Playoff National Championship.
The event will now run from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. The commemoration is free and open to the public, and organizers said all other program details remain the same.
This year’s celebration will highlight the contributions of women in the civil rights movement with the theme, “Soul, Spirit & Sacrifice: Honoring the Legacy of Coretta Scott King and the Women Who Faced America to Save U.S.” The program will include a keynote address by Dr. Traci Parker, musical performances, and the presentation of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award, according to the city.
The commission’s annual birthday celebration is produced by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission. More information is available at the city’s website, and residents with questions can contact Bloomington Volunteer Network Coordinator Aubrey Seader at aubrey.seader@bloomington.in.gov or 812-349-3433.
