Train strikes tractor trailer in Humboldt; no injuries reported
HUMBOLDT – No injuries were reported when a locomotive split a trailer in two, scattering tubs of butter-like spread about a Luzerne County industrial park Tuesday afternoon.
The crash happened around midday Tuesday on North Park Drive in the Humboldt Industrial Park in Hazle Township.
A Butler Transport trailer was crossing the Reading and Northern Railroad branch line serving the northern half of the industrial park as a train was approaching. This was at the entrance to United States Cold Storage on North Park Drive.
The crossing is marked by a simple crossbuck with a yield sign beneath it. No lights, signals, or barriers control the crossing there.
The trailer was split in two by the crash and its load — boxes upon boxes upon boxes of 15oz tubs of Country Crock spread — was sent scattered.
As a ShenSentinel photographer documented the scene, crews were seen lobbing the boxes from the wreckage of the trailer into an ASAP Service dumpster.
No injuries were reported in the incident. Hazle Township Fire responded.
Traffic along North Park Drive was snarled during the clean-up.
