Crews battle Minneapolis house fire in blizzard conditions; 2 sent to hospital in critical condition
Officials are investigating the cause of a Sunday evening house fire in Minneapolis that sent at least two people to the hospital in critical condition.
The Minneapolis Fire Department (MFD) said crews responded to reports of fire and smoke showing from the first floor of a house on the 4300 block of 30th Avenue South around 5 p.m.
Upon arriving, crews found an elderly resident in the yard who stated another resident was still inside the home, MFD said. That person was rescued, the fire department said, adding that crews had to perform CPR.
The two people were sent to the hospital in critical condition, MFD said.
Fire officials said crews were having a hard time moving through the home because a large number of items blocked their way, stating the home is “overpacked with stuff.”
The fire burned through the first floor of the home into the basement before traveling through the walls to the attic, a spokesperson for MFD said.
Just before 6 p.m., gas and electric utilities to the home were shut off, MFD said. A bus was also brought to the scene as a temporary shelter for residents and firefighters.
As of 7 p.m., fire crews continued to extinguish flames and hotspots. The home was deemed uninhabitable and will be boarded up, MFD said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
