About 3,000 educators with Anoka-Hennepin Public Schools are voting whether or not to go on strike.

If they vote to strike, teachers could walk out as early as the first week of January. The union says this is the last thing they want to happen.

But union members also say the district has left them with no other choice, adding that the offer that’s on the table right now is forcing educators to choose between better overall wages or more affordable health insurance.

The district said healthcare premiums have increased 22% this year, citing high claim expenses and more claims being made. The union says these premium increases are costing educators between $95-400 per paycheck.

Earlier this month, the district said, “Ensuring financial and operational stability for the district is a priority.”
