Ousted Rosemount police chief: City denied due process, enabled ‘public disparagement’

Former Rosemount Police Chief Mikael Dahlstrom, who officially resigned from his role this week, claims city staff tarnished his reputation and pushed him out of his job without a proper investigation.

The Rosemount City Council accepted Dahlstrom’s resignation on Tuesday, two months after he was placed on administrative leave as city officials looked into multiple internal complaints.

Dahlstrom detailed his grievances in a resignation letter he released to the public on Thursday.

“After nearly twenty years of dedication to Rosemount and my commitment to ensuring due process in the criminal justice system, I was taken aback by the vague and cryptic messaging deployed by the CityAdministration and Communications Department,” Dahlstrom wrote. “A respectful and smooth transition, while I considered the City’s proposed separation agreement, could have included an automated email reply from my account stating I was on leave. Instead, and almost immediately, their widespread messaging to the media allowed for uncontrolled interpretation and public disparagement.”

Dahlstrom went on to say his separation agreement with the city came “with no official investigation, no chance for dialogue, and without a vote of no confidence from the union,” adding that the ordeal “felt like an unnecessary and unprofessional media blast.”

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS reached out to Rosemount city officials and they provided the following response: “The city council took unanimous action to part ways with Mr. Dahlstrom in response to a significant number of internal complaints. The city has nothing further to add.”

The separation agreement approved this week sends Dahlstrom off with a $164,000 payout and, according to a city spokesperson, prevents either party from pursuing legal action in the future.

Deputy Chief Carson Thomas has served as interim chief since Dahlstrom was placed on leave in early October.
