Ice Castles construction starts at State Fairgrounds

The arrival of below-freezing temperatures and snow last week may have been unwelcome to many Minnesotans but it is speeding up the arrival of a popular winter attraction.

Ice Castles officials say construction of the icy experience is underway.

For the second year in a row, the attraction will be located on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

Tickets go on sale online starting Tuesday at 9 a.m.

While no opening date has been set yet, Ice Castles usually opens in early January, depending on weather conditions.

The company says its ice artisans will grow and place up to 10,000 icicles per day during construction of the 20-foot-tall castle, which features slides, tunnels, caverns, and sculptures.

Ice Castles was started in 2011 by a Utah man who built a winter playground for his kids.
