MC jail tax fails with 3 out of 4 voters against

Marion County voters decided Tuesday to not enact a half cent sales tax for jail and law enforcement operations.

The vote saw only 24 percent of votes cast for and 76 percent of voters against the measure. The current tax established in 2016 for the building of the law enforcement center will sunset in just over 3 months in February of 2026.

On election day 217 votes were cast for the measure bringing the total with early voting to 397. 693 votes against were cast Tuesday bringing the early voting total to 1244. In total 1643 votes were cast with 32 of 32 precincts reporting. Just over 14 percent of the county’s 11,367 registered voters took part in deciding the fate of the measure.
