An inmate at Ramsey County Jail is accused of biting off his cellmate’s ear during a fight on Nov. 10.
Michael Anthony Lewis, 34, faces one count of first-degree assault.
According to a criminal complaint, Lewis was in jail for an aggravated robbery case. On Nov. 10, Lewis’ cellmate told a correctional officer that he and Lewis were going to fight.
When the correctional officer went to check on the men, she saw that Lewis’ cellmate was lying on his bed trying to defend himself. His left ear was missing, and there was blood on his uniform, on the walls and on the floor. There was also a bloody pen on the floor.
Court documents state that Lewis was yelling at both his cellmate and the correctional officer.
Lewis’ cellmate was brought to the hospital, but doctors weren’t able to reattach his ear. He said that Lewis had tried to stab him with the pen and then bit off his ear. The cellmate added that the two hadn’t been getting along.
Court documents note that Lewis has previous convictions out of Louisiana for home invasion/simple battery, resisting an officer, possession of marijuana and simple battery.
In his Ramsey County aggravated robbery case, Lewis is accused of repeatedly hitting a man from behind with a metal pole before stealing his shoes, wallet and pants.
