One Twin Cities cemetery has a connection to a legendary architect.
The historic chapel and administration building on the grounds of Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville were built by Cass Gilbert.
“We are home to two of Cass Gilbert’s incredible architectural genius’,” Executive Director Amanda Thoreson said.
The cemetery hired Gilbert, then a rising architect, to design the buildings.“He was an up-and-comer from an architectural standpoint, so I think it made the most sense that he put another stamp in Minnesota,” Thoreson said.
Opened in 1904, the character of the chapel is derived from Medieval English country church architecture.
“We want families to feel comfort when they come in and we want them to feel at home,” Thoreson said.
Gilbert went on to design several significant buildings, including the Minnesota State Capitol and the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C.
