Deadline looms for future of former Roof Depot site in Minneapolis

A south Minneapolis neighborhood group faces a Monday deadline to secure funding to purchase the former Roof Depot property from the city.

The East Phillips Neighborhood Institute aims to transform the vacant site into an eco-friendly urban farm. However, they have struggled to raise the $11.4 million needed to buy the property.

Denise Vega, a local resident, expressed frustration with the current view from her home, saying, “I’m just tired of it.”

Evan, another resident, said, “If nothing is going in, it’s just an eyesore because it’s a fence all day. We got the building there, nothing going. It’s just killing the neighborhood.”

The city and EPNI released the following joint statement:

“Both parties acknowledge the impending deadline for the purchase agreement on the former Roof Depot property. While the City remains prepared to close, because the State legislature was unable to deliver the $5.7 million, it is unlikely EPNI will be able to meet the terms of the current agreement. We have met several times and appreciate the City and EPNI’s willingness to negotiate about the future of this site. Both parties are engaged in the process to develop a possible new agreement.”

The city originally purchased this site in 2016 for a new water system and has spent $19 million to maintain this property. City officials have not disclosed how they plan to recoup the money spent on the property, citing ongoing negotiations.

Evan questioned, “What are they doing with the money?”

Denise Vega said, “I want something good with our tax money. We pay enough taxes.”

If no agreement is reached, the city is prepared to consider offers from other buyers. Residents are eager for progress.

Evan said, “Maybe a strip mall. That’d be cool.”

Denise Vega expressed her preference, “I would just love, would really love a community garden, it would be wonderful, especially with all the high prices that would be just perfect.”

A representative from the East Phillips Neighborhood Institute remains optimistic, stating they are meeting with the city next week. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS will provide updates on any developments.
