TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC4) — A teenager has been arrested in connection with the shooting at a parking lot near Taylorsville High School on Friday.
According to a press release from Taylorsville Police, they arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of shooting a 14-year-old boy in a fast-food restaurant parking lot near the school. The victim was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting happened shortly after 12 p.m. on Friday, and police officers were dispatched to a fight in progress at the parking lot at the McDonald’s at 5571 S Redwood Road. Witnesses reported that as many as 20 teenagers were fighting and that they heard gunshots during the fight.
The 16-year-old was taken into custody without incident on Saturday, November 8 and was booked into the Salt Lake County Detention Center on charges related to the shooting, according to Taylorsville Police.
The suspect has not been formally charged yet, and the suspect’s identity has not been released, as the suspect is a juvenile.
The shooting caused six schools in the Granite School District to be placed under secure protocol at the direction of law enforcement, including Taylorsville High, Plymouth Elementary, Hartvigsen School, Eisenhower Jr. High, Fremont Elementary, and Vista Elementary.
The schools were released from secure status not long after.
