West Elementary honors veterans with annual program

CULLMAN, Ala. – West Elementary School hosted its annual Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 7, with two shows put on by the school’s fifth-grade classes.  
 
Fifth-Grade Teacher Sgt. Keenan Hollingsworth said the group also hosted a reception for local veterans Friday, as well as a program on Wednesday at the Cullman OmniPlex  
 
“Today was a powerful celebration filled with love, respect and deep gratitude for those who have served our country,” Hollingsworth said Friday. “This year, I added a quick history lesson on the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. It is something students should be taught, and my hope is that part of the program will stick with our students at West forever.” 
 
Hollingsworth said she felt the fifth graders showcased their appreciation for those who have dedicated their lives to defending our freedoms. 
 
“Students sang with great pride, and some even became overcome with emotion as they reflected on the meaning of service and sacrifice,” she said. “The presence of our Gold Star Mother, Mrs. Galin, made the lessons even more real, reminding everyone that freedom isn’t free.” 
 
Hollingsworth said she believes the program reflects a strong sense of national pride and unity from the students and for the community. 
 
“I could not be more proud of their hard work,” she said. “They poured their hearts into every song and word. I am truly honored to be their teacher.” 
 
Hollingsworth is a field artillery sergeant in the 117th Field Artillery Regiment of the Alabama National Guard.
