Body recovered from Big Sandy River

KENOVA, W.Va. (WOWK) — On Saturday, Kenova Police and rescue personnel from the Ceredo and Kenova Fire Departments recovered a body from the Big Sandy River.

Kenova Police said the body was identified as Mompida Hay, 42, from Ashland. Police believe Hay jumped from the Interstate 64 bridge on Oct. 27.

Rescue personnel from three counties searched the river the same night but were unable to locate the victim. Recovery efforts by Wayne County and Boyd County personnel continued afterwards.

Two kayakers reported sighting what they believed to be a body to Kenova Police on Saturday, and the recovery was made shortly after 4 p.m. The recovery location was more than a mile downstream of the interstate bridge.

Police turned the body over to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation.
