West Virginia’s first widespread snow possible Monday

Starting Sunday night, temperatures are expected to plummet in West Virginia, with forecasted lows in the 20s on Monday and Tuesday. This cold weather could also bring the first snow of the season.

According to the National Weather Service’s winter weather forecast, a good portion of the state is expected to get a dusting of less than half an inch, but there is a chance of widespread snowfall across the state, with a 10% chance of some higher elevation areas getting 2-3 inches of snow.

The StormTracker 12 Weather team will add expected totals to their forecast as the event gets closer.

The most likely areas for snow are the higher elevations of Preston County down to Greenbrier County and the coalfields in southern West Virginia.

The National Weather Service does not expect this to be a major weather event, but snowfall could impact driving conditions in some areas. The snow is expected to start around 9 p.m. on Sunday for high elevation places like Snowshoe and between midnight and 6 a.m. on Monday for the rest of the state, according to the National Weather Service.
