$30 million US 90 asphalt project aims for safer, smoother ride

IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) — A $30 million asphalt improvement project is underway on US 90, replacing old concrete with new pavement across several parishes, including Iberia Parish.

The Acadiana Planning Commission is overseeing the project, which involves removing deteriorating concrete between La. 83 and La. 85 and replacing it with stronger, longer-lasting material. This initiative is part of a federal and state effort to meet pavement-quality standards along major freight and evacuation routes.

“It’s really important that our national highway system, which is the system that connects all of our cities and ports and communities, be in good, good quality for the residents and the freight operators,” said Ashley Moran, MPO Manager of Acadiana Metropolitan Planning Organization. “There’s just so many benefits in terms of just safer operations of our roadway system when our pavement quality is in good condition.”

The project is funded through the National Highway Performance Program, with completion expected by early 2028. During the construction, drivers can expect severe traffic disruptions and interesting traffic configurations as crews work to expedite the operations.

The Acadiana Planning Committee states that this project is just one step in their overall plan to modernize US 90.

With the completion of this project, US.90 is expected to see significant improvements in pavement quality, enhancing safety and efficiency for both residents and freight operators.
