According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, a truck hauling a roll-off dumpster struck the north girder of a railroad bridge that spans over I-65 on the east side of downtown Indianapolis. The damaged railroad bridge is located just south of Washington Street.
INDOT said the damaged bridge was struck just over the center lane on the southbound side of I-65. The impact caused the bottom flange to rotate to a near 45-degree angle, with both the inside and outside edge bent upward and downward by roughly six inches.
The damage means the bridge’s clearance is now likely lower than 14 feet and six inches, meaning signs about the reduced clearance should be posted, the inspector stated in his report.
The bridge inspector noted the damage as a “critical find,” while CSX Railroad and the INDOT Central Office Railroad Section were notified of the incident.
“Further in-depth inspection by the Railroad is highly recommended,” the report states.
At this time, INDOT has not stated if any closures will be issued in order to complete the inspection or repairs.
