Terry Connor Jr. and Steven Staples are charged with killing Scott Brooks, co-owner of Brooks’ Sandwich House, during a robbery in December 2019. Brooks ran the popular eatery with his brother, David.
On Thursday afternoon, all but one of the four alternate jurors were seated. Jury selection began nearly two weeks ago.
David Brooks told us he plans to attend every day of the trial. He said he can do that thanks to extra help from The Hill Bar and Grill in Mint Hill, which is covering shifts so the Brooks family can focus on court proceedings.
“I’m going to have to tell the story of my brother, and that’s going to be one of the highlights of my life,” David said. “I can’t wait. And it’s a process that we’re going to have to go through. But I will not let my brother’s memory die. He was too good of a man for that.”
David said he’s grateful for the community’s support. The Hill’s owner told us he wants the attention to stay on the Brooks family so they receive all the help they need.
Opening statements will begin once the final alternate juror is selected, which could happen Friday afternoon.
