Angel Tree kicks off in Abilene to help children in need
Children can write their toy requests on tags, which are then placed on the Angel Tree. Community members can choose a tag, purchase the requested gift, and ensure it goes directly to the child who asked for it.
Major Joe Burton of the Salvation Army said seeing the joy the program brings is especially meaningful to him.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to be a part of this ministry in our community, especially when you go to a Walmart, and you walk in and see an angel tree. Then you see a little one go up and pull an angel from that tree. It’s just a blessing to see all of that happen because she or he picked up an angel for a specific child,” Burton said.
Burton added that the program resonates personally with him, as he remembers receiving gifts from the Salvation Army as a six-year-old when his family couldn’t afford them.
The Angel Tree event continues tonight at Potosi Live at 6:00 p.m., featuring live music and community celebrations. Angel Trees will also be available at local retailers through Saturday, giving everyone a chance to spread holiday cheer.
