RIVERTON, Utah (ABC4) — In a controversial mayoral race between Riverton City councilmembers, a frontrunner has emerged.

While all ballots have yet to be counted, Tish Buroker holds a 38-point lead over Tawnee McCay in a heated mayoral race to fill Trent Staggs’ mayoral seat.

Currently, election results show Tish Buroker leading McCay by over 2,600 votes, with 97% of precincts reporting.

McCay conceded in a social media post Wednesday morning with the following statement:

“I love Riverton. The people have spoken, and I want to congratulate Tish Buroker on a well-run campaign. I am confident Riverton is in good hands. Thank you everyone that helped at our service project and food drive. I’m excited to find other ways the Lord wants me to serve.”

Results indicate Buroker leads in all but one precinct, which is a 50-50 split. Partial results from one final precinct are expected to be counted Wednesday afternoon.

The seat became vacant after current mayor, Trent Staggs, accepted an appointment with the Trump Administration earlier this year. A heated race ensued between the two fellow councilmembers.

All results are unofficial.
