Organizers of Outer Banks Sporting Events have announced the cancellation of all OBX Marathon Weekend events due to the ongoing government shutdown.
“Unfortunately, we do not have access to the necessary government officials required on site or for road closures; as well as crowd control to ensure a safe event,” the statement on their website
OBX Marathon Weekend included a color run, 5k, 8k, half marathon and full marathon scheduled for Nov. 8 and 9.
“We know this is incredibly disappointing — for you, for our volunteers, and for our community who look forward to welcoming runners each fall,” officials said. “We understand how disappointing and frustrating this news is, and we truly share in your irritation.”
The organizers decided not to issue refunds for those who registered to run this weekend, citing their “Deferral and Refund Policy.” As an alternative, officials stated they are offering a 40% discount to all registered participants for future races in 2026.
On record, this has been the longest government closure in U.S. history. Government agencies in law enforcement, necessary to close roads for OBX Marathon Weekend, as well as household benefits such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), have been heavily impacted by the shutdown.
As communities and businesses come together to help citizens impacted by the shutdown, the blow seems too damaging for some, including scenarios like those who help enforce a road closure for a race.
