“Big news here in Union Square. Macy’s and a local developer are committed to reimagining this space behind me,” said Lurie, while standing in front of the store’s O’Farrell Street location. “But they aren’t going anywhere.”
Lurie also announced that a new tenant had been found for the old Uniqlo store on Powell Street and that holiday preparations for the neighborhood, like the Union Square Christmas tree being up and winter walk returning, were already underway.
“Union Square, alongside San Francisco, is on the rise. Let’s go,” Lurie said.
Macy’s had been slated to close at some point since the department store chain announced last year that the Union Square was among 150 stores set to close nationally. The closure announcement came amid an exodus of retailers from the neighborhood, which was for a long time, the retail center of San Francisco.
However, following the high-profile exit of retailers like Nordstrom and the hollowing out of the San Francisco Centre Mall, Union Square has seen something of a turnaround lately. The Nintendo Store opened on Powell Street earlier this year and fashion retailer, Zara announced plans to open a new flagship store in Union Square.
