A 17-year-old juvenile was arrested during a traffic stop conducted in the 900 block of South St Charles Street on Monday, police said.
According to officers, they were dispatched to the area of East Martin Luther King Jr Drive and Schlessinger Street in reference to a complaint of the sound of gunshots in the area. After responding to the initial complaint, officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Marmont Street in reference to a vehicle crash. When officers arrived to the scene, they located the vehicle and the driver, Jaylon Freeman, with apparent gunshot wounds. Freeman was transported to the local hospital for treatment, police said.
During the investigation, officials identified a 17-year-old male juvenile as a suspect in connection to the incident and obtained an a felony arrest warrant for the following charges: attempted second degree murder, illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities and 3 counts of aggravated criminal damage to property.
Following the arrest, the juvenile was transported to the Abbeville Police Station, booked on his active felony arrest warrant and later transported to a juvenile correctional facility.
This case is still actively under investigation.
