Davis County sees increase in stolen vehicles and firearms, reminds residents to lock up belongings

DAVIS COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — The Davis County Sheriff’s Office has reported an increase in vehicle and weapon thefts in recent months, and they are warning the public to help prevent these crimes by locking their vehicles.

In a media release, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office said that there has been “a four-month-long crime spree across Davis County.” Over that time, there has been over 30 stolen firearms, 58 stolen vehicles, and more than 300 vehicles broken into.

Because of that, law enforcement agencies across the county are asking the community to help them prevent these types of crimes.

Davis County Sheriff’s Office provided the following tips to protect your property and prevent thefts.

  • Never leave a weapon in a vehicle.
  • Always lock your vehicle.
  • Do not leave your keys inside the vehicle.
  • Establish a nightly routine to make sure that your property and belongings are securely stored.
  • Report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood.

Law enforcement has managed to recover 11 stolen firearms, but the Sheriff’s Office said that has not stopped unsecured firearms being left in unlocked vehicles. In almost every incident the Sheriff’s Office has investigated, no force was used to enter the vehicles.

In August, 14 vehicles were burglarized in a single night in Fruit Heights, Utah, which led to five firearms being stolen from unlocked vehicles.
