CACC hosts drive-thru pet food pantry Wednesday to support city pet owners

CHICAGO — The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) pause is also impacting pet owners.

This is the first time in years that Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) has asked for donations to provide to families in need.

What started as a social media post asking for donations, turned into an outpouring of support.

“I don’t want Chicago residents to have to decide between themselves or their pets. I want pets to stay in their homes with the people who love them,” said Sue Cappello of CACC.

This Wednesday, CACC, located at 2741 South Western Avenue, is hosting a drive-thru pet food pantry from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The distribution is limited to Chicago residents. Supplies are limited and intended to help as many families as possible. One household per vehicle, with food available for up to two pets. Distribution will continue while supplies last.

Cappello expressed her gratitude for donors, saying the organization has received donations from animal lovers worldwide.

“We have packages from as far away as Australia. It truly fills my heart,” she said. “It takes the community to help in animal welfare and this is showing us that the community wants to help.”

Over the past year, CACC has seen an uptick in the number of families surrendering their pets. Many times, it’s solely because of financial reasons.

The shelter is currently housing 240 dogs and 150 cats.

For anyone who would like to donate pet food for the drive-thru pantry, check out their Amazon Wish List.
