Average NC office wait times at the DMV continue to drop; however 20 locations had increases

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – New wait time data from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles shows the average time at offices statewide continues to go down, while some have increased.

The drop comes after new legislation that allows more transactions to happen online, instead of in person.

The average wait time for a customer statewide decreased by more than 25 minutes from September to October. The average wait time for offices also decreased by more than 25 minutes.

But the latest information of 110 locations indicates three state offices have average wait times over 3 hours and 20 DMV offices still have wait time averages in the 2-hour range.

Taking a look at times in the Triangle, the Cary office had the longest average wait time in August at more than five hours. In September, dropped to about three hours, then about 2 hours and 47 minutes in October, according to data from NCDMV.

Raleigh’s location on Spring Forest Road saw its average time drop by more than two hours.

But, central North Carolina has eight offices with the longest average wait times, with Oxford, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Cary, Raeford, Louisburg, and both Durham locations listed in the top 10.

Some places even saw a time increase — including both DMV offices in Durham.

In the DMV list, 20 offices had wait times increase during the period measured.
