Local churches and food pantries have stepped in to help, and they’re not alone. The Arkansas Foodbank is also helping in the fight to end hunger.
On Monday, FOX 16 Good Day visited to see how busy the facility is. Kate Jenkins with the Arkansas Foodbank said their phones have been ringing off the hook.
“The calls haven’t stopped coming in since the government shutdown happened, and so far, we’ve been loading up over 10 trucks a day with food to take to local pantries,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins said the foodbank is now in emergency response mode, and what people are experiencing is a hunger crisis.
“Typically, we would see one to two families stop by, but now it’s over 10,” Jenkins said.
She says they are fighting to keep up with the high demand, and as they continue to provide resources, she wants people to start using their voices in a way that’ll make a difference to thousands.
“Start calling your legislators, please, and press them about this issue because our resources can only go so far for so long. We need a change to happen,” Jenkins said.
