When SNAP benefits were cut Nov. 1, life became drastically more difficult for them.
“Oh, it’s really, really bad because now, Where you could go to the store and buy what you want, now you got to think about well how am I going to scrap and feed all these people in this house?” Treme resident Doretha Augustus said.
Thankfully, there are some in the city, like the folks at Kermit’s Mother-In-Law Lounge in Treme looking to help.
They say throughout the month of November, they will be giving out food to those in need.
“It is a blessing man, because you’re able to, you know, put a food on somebody’s table, and somebody won’t be cranking their stomach; it won’t be cranking at night,” Food drive helper Lance Crowley said.
Dozens of people and cars lined up outside the lounge on Monday, the first day of the giveaway, thankful for the kind service of the team.
“This is the best thing ever. I don’t even know how to show my appreciation other than pay it forward,” Treme resident Alexus Johnson said.
However, no matter how thankful, a return to normalcy is the real goal of everyone in line’s mind.
“Hopefully. You know, but, you know, things just don’t look good from the top down,” Augustus said.
The food drive at Kermit’s Mother-in-Law Lounge will last through at least November, and they will serve every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 5:00.
