BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — The Beckley Police Department has released additional information regarding a suspicious item found in a trick-or-treat basket on Halloween.
According to a press release, the origin of a prescription fentanyl vial that was reportedly found in a child’s trick-or-treat basket on Halloween was traced to a local medical facility by the Beckley Police Department.
The press release stated that the facility is working with investigators and the incident remains under active investigation. The Beckley Police Department stated that no further information will be given, and the name of the facility is not being released.
According to the press release, members of law enforcement do not have the equipment to field test liquids, and the vial will go for testing at an accredited state or federal lab.
The Beckley Police Department stated that given the information at this time, the incident “does not appear to be an intentional act related to Halloween or any attempt to harm the public.”
According to the press release, the Beckley Police Department advised the public to report any concerns or suspicious discoveries.

According to a press release, the item in question was described as a small vial that contained an unknown substance. The vial was labeled as “fentanyl”.
No injuries were sustained during the incident and that the parents of the child reported it to law enforcement immediately. The substance was sent to a lab where it will be analyzed and positively identified.
Beckley P.D. also reminded parents to check their children’s Halloween candy before they eat it.
