Ex-Mississippi substitute teacher sentenced for child sex crimes

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A former substitute teacher in Mississippi was sentenced on sexual battery and child exploitation charges.

Attorney General Lynn Fitch (R-Miss.) announced Jakalyn Moore, of Southaven, was conviction on one count of sexual battery by a person in position of trust and authority and one count of child exploitation.

“Exploiting children that you are responsible to care for is a serious violation of trust,” said Fitch. “I am grateful to my team for their hard work investigating and prosecuting this predator, as well as the FBI for their partnership on this case. It is my hope that closing this chapter will help the victims and their families on their journey to healing and recovery.”

On October 27, 2025, Moore, a former West Tallahatchie School District substitute teacher, was sentenced to 25 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC), with 15 years to serve and 10 years of post-release supervision. Moore was also ordered to pay a $2,000 assessment to the Victims of Human Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation Fund. She will also be required to register as a sex offender.

Moore was also sentenced to serve 15 years on a federal charge of production of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Her federal charge and state sexual battery charge will run concurrently and will be served in federal prison.

Following her release, Moore will still serve 10 years of state post-release supervision.
