ESU and WU hold food drives ahead of the ‘Turnpike Tussle’

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Washburn’s food drive, “Can Emporia,” is a friendly competition before the Turnpike Tussle against the Hornets.

Both schools collect food and non-perishable items, starting on September 8. All of the donations go towards each school’s campus food pantry. This feeds students, faculty, and staff in need.

Student leaders say the competition is a fun way to help out in the community.

“In order to have the best functioning campus,” said Washburn Student Government Member, Taylor Redington. “We need to make sure that everyone has their basic needs met and that they’re able to live while being supported by those around them.”

Around 188,000 Kansans have been missing out on SNAP benefits since the start of November. One way to directly chip in is through contributions to food drives like “Can Emporia” and “Can the Bods”.

It’s not too late to donate; the competition ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Nov 3. You can donate to Washburn University here and to Emporia State University here.
