BROUSSARD, La. (
KLFY) — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is making significant progress on the Ambassador Caffery Interchange Project in Broussard, with the project now 80% complete and expected to finish by spring 2026.
The project, which began in late 2023, aims to upgrade U.S. 90 to future Interstate 49 South standards, transforming an eight-mile stretch into a six-lane corridor. This $136 million initiative is designed to improve freight movement, reduce congestion, and provide an alternate evacuation route for South Louisiana.
“We’ve actually made quite a bit of progress on this project,” said Diedra Druilhet, a spokesperson for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. “We started work on the overpass over Ambassador Caffrey. We’ve done the turnarounds for the project. We’re doing frontage roads along that particular area.”
The project is a major step in upgrading U.S. 90 to interstate standards, which is crucial for enhancing the movement of freight along this key corridor.
“U.S. 90, it’s a big freight corridor,” Druilhet said. “So being able to have freight move along the corridor much more freely instead of a lot of that stop-and-go traffic that you see right now.”
Traffic has been shifted to new frontage roads to maintain two lanes open in each direction during construction. This approach helps minimize disruptions while work continues on the main roadway.
Druilhet also mentioned the importance of the project as an enhanced evacuation route for residents needing to move from the southern part of the state to the north during emergencies.
