LOUISIANA (KTAL/KMSS) — The Louisiana Supreme Court is creating an online portal so that domestic violence survivors can request a civil protection order.

The initiative is part of Louisiana’s ongoing efforts to stop domestic violence. According to a press release, the portal will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Once a testing phase is complete, applicants will be able to apply for a protective order online.

“Together with our funding partners in the Legislature, we are simplifying the protective order process, which improves access to justice for those who have been victimized by domestic violence. Domestic violence is far too prevalent in Louisiana, and the judiciary must continue to reduce barriers and increase access to the court system,” said Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice John L. Weimer.

Louisiana Supreme Court Associate Justice Cade R. Cole said that by utilizing this technology, the state is making courts more efficient, effective, and responsive.

Once the portal is operational, it will be managed by the Louisiana Protective Order Registry, which manages court orders used to prevent domestic abuse, dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault.

The Louisiana Supreme Court is one of only seven state Supreme Courts that
administers its state’s protective order registry.

There is no information on the expected launch date.
