Chicago neighborhood creates Halloween ‘safe space’ for kids amid ICE raids

CHICAGO — A Chicago neighborhood is creating a “safe space” for children amid ongoing ICE raids in the city.

The 2400/2500 block of North Bernard Street, near Fullerton Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood, will be shut down to traffic for trick-or-treaters.

The two blocks obtained Block Party permits from the city.

Earlier this week, Governor JB Pritzker wrote to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and DHS leadership, asking to suspend enforecement operations until Sunday around schools, parks and houses of worship.

Noem denied the governor’s request, calling it shameful and accused Pritzker of not recognizing the important work agents are doing to keep streets safe for kids.

Volunteers will patrol Bernard Street to protect the children and their parents.
