Player of the Week: Byrd’s Christian Maxie

SHREVEPORT, LA (KTAL/KMSS) — History was made last Friday in Byrd’s 49-40 win over Benton. Yellowjackets wing back Christian Maxie accounted for 42 of Byrd’s 49 points which put him in the record books.

“Beginning of my freshman year I would like never like thought about breaking the school record but like, at the time it was just like dang, I got my name like in history books forever,” Maxie said.

In 121 years of Byrd football, Christian Maxie accomplished something that’s never been done. The junior running back scored six touchdowns.

“I had like four touchdowns and I was like dang, this is like a really good game because like I could never get like three touchdowns and then after that fifth touchdown I was like, what is the school record?,” Maxie stated. “Then coach told me I got one more and I was like dang it’s all I had to get it and it was towards the end of the game, like anybody else probably would slide to like waste time on the clock but I just wanted to embark my name to the history books so you know I just took the moment,” Maxie said.

“It’s something that young man’s always gonna remember, his name will always be in the record book for that and it’ll be alongside of a lot of great players, so that’s a special moment for him for sure,” head coach Stacy Ballew said.

Maxie didn’t just do it on the ground, he also did it through the air with a passing touchdown.

“When he called the play in the huddle, he was like, Maxie put it out there, I was like, I got you and then when I caught the pitch, and like I seen everybody crash down to him like, oh he’s wide open. So like I led him a little bit and he got in the endzone,” Maxie said.

His confidence keeps growing and Maxie gives all the credit to his teammates.

“It just builds confidence with the O-line, you know you can’t do it without them, so like it just be comfortable within the team and the defense to help them play better because they know that we got people on the other side of the ball to put it in the endzone,” Maxie stated.

“The whole offense did really good the other night, and coach Leone did a really good job of game plan and play calling getting him the ball, and he, he just had a great night, you know, it helps when he’s got a lot of speed and he’s a smart player and, and was able to run all those plays from different spots effectively,” Ballew said.

Maxie and the Yellowjackets hit the field again on Friday, October 31 against Airline.
