Travis Martin, 35, has been charged with one count of aggravated assault (third-degree felony) and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia (class B misdemeanor).
According to court documents, on Wednesday evening, law enforcement was dispatched to the area of 200 Sout and 700 West in Salt Lake City for a report of an assault with a weapon. Allegedly, Martin had attacked someone with a bat before fleeing on a bicycle.
When police found the victim, they were in a wheelchair and had visible bruising. They were transported to the University of Utah Hospital.
Martin was later found in the area of Jeremy Street. Law enforcement shared that he had accelerated speech and appeared agitated.
Court documents state that Martin admitted to having a verbal altercation with an individual matching the victim’s description but stated that it was never physical. Despite law enforcement discovering a bat in the area, Martin told police that he “did not need a bat to beat up someone, especially not someone in a wheelchair.”
It is reported that Martin then informed officers that he had swallowed drugs and needed medical attention. He was transported to St. Mark’s Hospital.
While at the hospital, police shared that Martin changed his statement a few times but was adamant that he did not have a bat.
Court documents report that, upon a search of Martin’s property, items commonly used for illegal narcotic consumption were discovered.
