BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (
WIAT) — Starting Sunday, unless the United States government comes to an agreement and ends its weekslong shutdown, no benefits will be issued through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, leaving millions of people who depend on the program for food to fend for themselves.
In Alabama, roughly 1 in 7 people, or roughly 752,000 people, rely on SNAP benefits for food. Each SNAP beneficiary receives approximately $187 per month through the program to go toward food. Those who are part of the program typically live 130% or more below the poverty line.
Now, Alabama food banks and organizations are stepping up to provide what they can in the situation of SNAP benefits being cut.
