
He said, “My father was in World War II; he was a decorated World War II veteran, and I remember when I saw his pictures and saw some of the other guys when they came home. The neat uniforms and the way that they were looking all starched and crisp, and I said I want to join the military.”
The Vietnam War was underway, and many thought he was crazy to join at that time; however, he felt he would have more opportunities if he enlisted than he would if he stayed at home. He excelled in the military, being promoted through the ranks and placed over other people. It was at that point that he knew he could do anything anyone else could do.
Epperson says the military is a good option for young people. There is nothing wrong with learning discipline. He also points out that everyone should honor veterans. He is the proud chairman of the Veterans Celebration Committee.
Their annual ceremony takes place Saturday, November 15, at 5 p.m. at the Shreveport Convention Center. A veterans parade will also be held on Sunday, November 16, at 2 p.m. at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds. Veterans and military members receive free admission.
