Joseph Wilson Jr. was hired by the Mecklenburg County Police Department before the city and county merged.
“Officer Wilson was a trailblazer who broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of law enforcement officers,” CMPD wrote. “The impact that he had on his department is one that will never be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who wear the badge and strive to make a difference through service and integrity.”
Wilson, 83, attended York Road High School and was part of the first graduating class in 1959. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and completed his service with an honorable discharge, according to his obituary.
Wilson passed away on Monday, October 13, at Novant Health Hospice & Palliative Care in Charlotte. His funeral was held on October 24.
