BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A wrong-way driver was killed and another motorist was seriously injured in a head-on crash early Saturday on Interstate 69 north of Bloomington, Indiana State Police said.
Johnathon S. Clark, 33, of Nashville, Indiana, died from injuries after driving a 2016 Jeep Wrangler southbound in the northbound lanes near the 126.5-mile marker and striking a 2011 GMC Sierra pickup, according to a preliminary investigation. The pickup’s driver, Solomon Dillard-Rynard, 29, of Bloomington, was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital with serious injuries.
Both vehicles came to rest in the median, and the Jeep overturned and caught fire. Troopers and Monroe County deputies used fire extinguishers to keep the flames from engulfing the vehicle, police said.
The crash prompted the closure of I-69 northbound for several hours, with traffic diverted to State Road 46 westbound to U.S. 231. All lanes later reopened.
Troopers from the Bloomington District, the ISP reconstruction team, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, firefighters and IU Health ambulance personnel responded. The Monroe County coroner also responded.
The crash remains under investigation.
